Kalmunai residents who lost their homes and livelihood in the tsunami of 24th December 2004, held a protest Monday morning in front of the Kalmunai District Secretariat demanding permanent housing, sources in Kalmunai said. The protesters were from the 178 families of Maruthamunai in Ampaa'rai district.

The protesters demanded that they should be provided with permanent houses that had been constructed at Meadduvaththaii area.

The spokesperson for the protestors said that without permanent houses they were undergoing untold hardships and they should be accommodated in the Meadduvaththai permanent housing scheme with basic facilities including electricity and water supply.

Protestors agreed to call-off the rally after Kalmunai DS Mr.M.M.Naubal visited the site and assured them that the matter would be brought to the notice of the Government Agent, and that the Maruthamunai villagers would be provided with houses within two weeks.

However, sources close to the District Secretariat said the Ampaa'rai District Government Agent had postponed the handing over of houses in Meadduvaththai permanent housing for undisclosed reasons.
