Uprooted families in PTK join de-militarisation struggle, mark February 04 as Black Day

Uprooted families in PTK join de-militarisation struggle, mark February 04 as Black Day

[TamilNet, Friday, 03 February 2017, 21:08 GMT]
The 682 Brigade of the occupying Army of genocidal Sri Lanka has stationed at the heart of Puthuk-kudiyiruppu town since 2009 in the lands seized from 49 Eezham Tamil families. The protests organised by the landowners in the past 5 years addressing three Divisional Secretariats in the past have gone on deaf ears. Tamil parliamentarians came and asked the people to wait. Finally, the matter was taken up at a District Coordinating Committee meeting last year. SL Minister Rishad Bathiyutheen was present at the meeting and asked three more months time to secure a positive response from the SL President Sirisena, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the SL military. But, more than 6 months have elapsed since the promised deadline. Nothing has happened. The families have taken to the streets proclaiming the so-called ‘independence’ day of genocidal Sri Lanka on February 04 as a Black Day.

The struggle of 49 uprooted families from Puthuk-kudiyiruppu comes as people from Keappaa-pulavu and Pilak-kudiyiruppu were waging a protest in front of the SL Air Force camp at Keappaapulavu located along Nanthik-kadal lagoon.

52-year-old Thaya Suntharalingam, one of the landowners at Puthuk-kudiyiruppu said three different struggles they waged in the past didn't yield any result and that they are now determined to wage a relentless campaign of boycott with their call to the people of Mullaiththeevu and the rest of the island to support their demand of militarising the lands they have owned for more than 60 years.

71-year-old Alliyamma Nallathamby, says she didn't want any housing scheme from the SL regime. “I want to put a hut in my land on my own and I want to live there till I pass away,” she says.

72-year-old Kangasabai Kanagratnam said he too only wanted his lands back. There are lot of problems due to the military presence. “Why have they put up a military base in our private lands while there are jungles out there,” he asked the reporters.

In the meantime, several protesting mothers complained that they had no livelihood support. They had lost all the income due to military seizure of their lands. In addition they are paying at least 8,000 rupees per family to rent other places.

In total 19 acres have been seized by the SL military at the locality.

A former Divisional Secretary, Mr Dayananda, was collaborating with the SL military to seize the lands from the people, the protesters complained.

Ranil Wickramasinghe schemes next phase of structural genocide of Trincomalee

Ranil Wickramasinghe schemes next phase of structural genocide of Trincomalee

[TamilNet, Thursday, 02 February 2017, 22:23 GMT]
The Coast Conservation Department (CCD), SL Archaeology Department, SL Tourism Board and the Ministry of Defence of the genocidal State of Sri Lanka are being tightly coordinated by certain foreign-relations involved ministers and officials in Colombo to demarcate a large tract of land to the west of Cheenan-kudaa (China Bay), which is to be leased out to a foreign country, informed civil sources in Trincomalee told TamilNet on Thursday. In the meantime, SL Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe is trying to create competition between India and China to strike a trade agreement involving the occupied capital of the nation of Eezham Tamils. Lands with varieties of Ka’ndal mangroves up to 2 km in distance from the coastline of China Bay are to be leased out in the first phase, the sources say.

The CCD has instructed the Divisional Secretary that the lands coming under the 2 km distance have been placed under the domain of SL CCD and Archaeology departments.

Following the Tsunami disaster in December 2004, a buffer zone was declared limiting construction activities between 100 meters and 200 meters from the permanent vegetation along the coast.

There are more than 80 big oil tanks at China Bay. The Petroleum Resources Development Ministry is extremely interested in leasing out some of these tanks to joint ventures with foreign countries, the sources further say.

Mr Wickramasinghe, who addressed a press conference at the World Economic Forum summit held in Davos, Switzerland in January, was talking of two economic development corridors in the island. The main focus would be Southwestern Corridor linking Colombo and Kandy with Hambantota.

Free Trade Agreements were being negotiated with China, Japan, Singapore and India, according to Mr Wickramasinghe.

The second area of focus would be ‘Northeastern Economic Development Corridor’ surrounding Trincomalee Harbour, he said.

A contract has been entered already with Singaporean government-owned consultancy company Surbana Jurong to plan the ‘development’ of Trincomalee Harbour, Wickramasinghe claimed in that meeting. He also mentioned that negotiations were taking place with India.

Informed sources in Colombo said that the SL Prime Minister Wickramasinghe and Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera were ‘working hard’ to lease out coastal lands in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils to foreign powers in an attempt to confront the looming economic crisis.

Collaborating foreign diplomats based in Colombo are also working in full swing to trap the Tamil diaspora to invest in the island promising a role in the so-called development of North and East.

Uprooted Ezham Tamil women confront structural genocide in Mullaiththeevu

Uprooted Ezham Tamil women confront structural genocide in Mullaiththeevu

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 01 February 2017, 23:22 GMT]
The uprooted Eezham Tamil families from Keappaa-pulavu in Mullaiththeevu have blamed the SL military of genocidal Sri Lanka for deploying all the mechanisms of the unitary State in Colombo to deprive them their lands. After a series of protests, SL President Maithiripala Sirisena was supposed to release 234 acres of lands in January as a temporary measure to contain the struggle of the uprooted people. But, only 142 acres are to be released, the people say. That too, not from the coastal and agricultural side along the Nanthik-kadal. The SL Air Force has stationed itself in the fertile lands. SL Forest Department was trying to add confusion by claiming the lands as coming under its purview. The Forest Department falls under Mahaweli Ministry, which is being run by none other than Mr Maithiripala.

The SL military intelligence was attempting to deploy divide-and-conquer tactic to suppress the protests.

As the people were firm in staging protests, the visit of Mr Sirisena was postponed and later his trip was cancelled citing bad weather conditions.

In the meantime, SL Forest Department, which comes under Sirisena’s ministerial purview, started to claim that the lands belonged to it. But, the department was unable to proceed with its claim as the uprooted people were having clear documentation of their lands.

Now, the uprooted people are on a continuous demonstration outside the SLAF camp, day and night.

“The Colombo government, its military and all government officials under them are deceiving us each time. They are asking us to wait. We are not prepared to wait anymore,” 34-year-old Gowsalya Sathees, an uprooted mother from Pulavuk-kudyiriuppu in Keapppa-pulavu told TamilNet.

After the Forest Department withdrew its claim of surveying lands for its purpose, the survey officials promised to survey the lands that in fact belongs to uprooted people so that they can rightfully resettle there. The survey department officials were supposed to come on Tuesday. But, they didn’t show up as promised. The SLAF has intervened to block the move, the uprooted people allege.

“When we called the Divisional Secretary, the answer we received was that we have to wait for another 3 months. Then, we decided to protest in front of the SLAF camp. The GA showed up and talked to military. We don't know what they really discussed. But, she was also asking us more time. Tamil politicians and youth were also asking one-week time. But, we are not prepared to abandon our struggle,” Gowsaly Sathees told TamilNet on Wednesday.

Keappaa-pulavu is a village situated along Nanthik-kadal lagoon in Mullaiththeevu where the last stage of genocidal onslaught took place. The LTTE was having an airstrip in the interior lands and the occupying SL Air Force is not willing to relocate itself from the lands of the people, even 7 years after the end of war.

The military has been trying to dump the people into alternative lands creating so-called ‘model-village’ as a settlement. But, this model-village has become a slum. Nobody is willing to marry the girls from this slum. Structural and social destruction is witnessed by the people. Alcohol and narcotic usage is also observed at the ‘model’ village, according to Mrs Inthirany Vivekananthan, another mother who was also taking part in the protests. In an interview to TamilNet in January, she narrated the story of the long protests by the villagers, who remain firm in their demand of resettling in Keappaa-pulavu. Inthirany’s interview is reproduced below:

The main challenge of the uprooted people is regaining their livelihood. It is not possible for them to take control of their lives without gaining access to their coastal and agricultural lands.

32nd anniversary of Vaddakka'ndal genocidal massacre commemorated

32nd anniversary of Vaddakka'ndal genocidal massacre commemorated

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 31 January 2017, 23:24 GMT]
Northern Provincial Council (NPC) Chief Minister, Justice C.V. Wigneswaran on Monday joined hands with NPC Opposition Leader Sinnadurai Thavarajah of the EPDP and the people of Vaddak-ka'ndal in Mannaar, commemorating 32nd anniversary of the genocidal massacre of 88 Eezham Tamils, who were shot and butchered to death in execution-style and by 300 Sinhala soldiers who had surrounded the village from all directions in the early hours of 30th January in 1985. Farmers, labourers, students, teachers and a school principal were among the massacred at various places in the village. The SL military had been wantonly targeting Tamil villagers in Mannaar for more than a month since 04 December 1984, when the Tamil Tigers carried out an ambush on an armoured vehicle of the SL military at Moon'raam-piddi, a village located on Mannaar - Jaffna Road.

Seven or eight SLA soldiers were killed in the Tiger ambush at Moon'raamp-piddi.

On the same day, SL military massacred at least 160 Tamil civilians at several places on Mannaar - Jaffna Road.

Buses were stopped and people of all ages were shot, butchered and killed by the SLA soldiers. Their bodies were dumped into steel barrels at gun point and these were rolled into the hospital.

Since that day, the SL military was wantonly targeting Tamil villagers in Mannaar, particularly the townships of Adampan, Murungkan, Uyilang-ku'lam and the agricultural suburbs.

The SL Army and SL Air Force, came from Tha'l'laadi military base. The SL military was on a long campaign of wanton targeting of villagers for more than a month since

On 30 January 1985, SLA soldiers from Tha'l'laadi military base, assisted by a SLAF helicopter, entered Vaddak-ka'ndal, a suburb of Adampan, in the early hours and captured the farmers, students and teachers at various places.

Sinhala soldiers selected Tamil males belonging to all ages among the victims, instructed them to walk towards Vaddak-ka'ndal Government Tamil Mixed School and massacred them inside and outside the school premises. Around 50 people were massacred near the school. The principal of the school and two teachers were dragged away from the school and gunned down in execution style. Most of the victims were from Vaddangkaddal, Kaaththaan-ku'lam, Aalang-ku'lam, Paalap-perumaa'l-kaddu and Ma'nip-pul-ku'lam. At least 15 of those massacred were students.

The SLAF helicopter landed inside the premises of the Vaddak-ka'ndal GTMS and a Sinhala military commander inspected the massacre.

33 Tamil villagers from the nearby Ma'nip-pul-ku'lam village were brought to Thurusadi junction and executed one by one by the Sinhala soldiers. A large number of Sinhala soldiers were in black uniform, according to the eyewitnesses who spoke at the memorial event.

NPC Chief Minister Justice C.V. Wigneswaran said the history of massacres against Tamils had started long before the Tamil youth actually took to the weapons. All the successive regimes in Colombo were backing the genocidal massacres against Tamils, he said.

The brother-in-law of NPC Opposition Leader Sinnadurai Thavarajah was one of the teachers who was massacred at Vaddak-ka'ndal School. Mr Thavarajah said the families of the principal and the teachers, who were from Jaffna and Mullaiththeevu districts, were now living outside.

Vaddak-ka'ndal (meaning the swamp in the locality of cultivation fields) is an ancient agricultural Tamil village, located in Maanthai West division of Mannaar district.
