40-year-old Sri Lanka constitution burnt at cremation ground of Parvathi Amma

The 1972 republican constitution of Sri Lanka, which for the first time constitutionalised the unitary Sinhala-Buddhist State and brought in the name ‘Sri Lanka’, against the wishes of the nation of Eezham Tamils in the island, has been burnt on its 40th anniversary on Tuesday, 22 May 2012, at the spot where the LTTE leader Pirapharan's mother was cremated but desecrated by the occupying Sinhala forces last year.

A group of more than 40 young Tamil activists, braving the hounding eyes of the occupying Sinhala military, burnt the SL Constitution at the Oo'ra'ni crematorium in Valveddiththu'rai in Jaffna on Tuesday afternoon.

The group, after raising slogans and distributing printed leaflets to the public, left the scene immediately, according to news sources in Valveddith-thu'rai.

A couple of days before its proclamation in Colombo, the draft of the 1972 Constitution was burnt by the Ilangkai Thamizh Arasuk Kadchi (ITAK) leader SJV Chelvanayakam and others, including Mr. Amirthalingam, at the Arumuga Navalar Ashramam Hall at Neeraaviyadi in Jaffna in May 1972.

The 1972 constitution was the progenitor for the rise of all shades of armed Tamil militancy.

The 1972 constitution made even the moderate Tamil political leaders to abandon the demand for federalism and to go for a separate state solution.

The call of the Tamil political leaders polarising into the Vaddukkoaddai Resolution of 1976 was endorsed by the Eezham Tamils of the North and East in the general elections of 1977, which was the last ever free elections for the Tamils of the island to speak on that point.

Last year, when the LTTE leader Pirapaharan's octogenarian mother, who survived the barbed-wire camp and military detention was cremated at the Oo'ra'ni crematorium in Valveddith-thu'rai, before the ritual collection of her ashes, the occupying Sinhala Army desecrated the spot by throwing three slain dogs and running over the ground by military vehicles.

Meanwhile, former TNA parliamentarian Mr M K Sivajilingam, denied any involvement of him in the action as brought out by some media reporters. Earlier, there were reports that the group of Tamil activists were led by Mr Sivajilingam.

However, Mr Sivajilingam pointed out the plight of Tamils in the last 40 years under the republican constitution introduced in 1972. He also recollected SJV Chelvanayakam burning the constitution in 1972.

சத்தீஸ்கர் மாநிலத்தில் மாவோயிஸ்ட்களால் கடத்தப்பட்ட கலெக்டர் அலெக்ஸ் பால் மேனன் நேற்று நெல்லை மாவட்டத்தில் தமது சொந்த ஊருக்குவந்தார். காலையில் ரயிலில் வந்தவர், தமது கிராமமான சமாதானபுரத்திற்கு சென்று உறவினர்களை சந்தித்தார். மாலையில் பல்வேறு அமைப்புகள் ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த பாராட்டு விழாவில் அவர் பேசியதாவது: நான் கடத்தப்பட்டபோது எனக்காக குரல் கொடுத்த நெல்லை மாவட்டத்து மக்களை நினைக்கும்போது நெகிழ்வாக உள்ளது. நான் ஆறு ஆண்டுகள் அங்கு பணியாற்றியுள்ளேன். அப்போதெல்லாம் பத்திரிகை, மீடியாவின் வெளிச்சத்தில் இருந்து தப்பித்திருக்கிறேன். தற்போது அதற்கெல்லாம் சேர்த்து தெரிய ஆரம்பித்துள்ளேன். இருப்பினும் நான்மேற்கொண்ட மக்கள் பணிக்காக நான் தெரிந்துகொண்டால் மகிழ்ச்சியடைவேன். கடத்தப்பட்ட கலெக்டர் என்ற அடையாளம் எனக்கு தேவையில்லை. சுக்மாவிற்கு முன்னதாக இன்னொரு மாவட்டத்தில் பணியாற்றியபோது அங்கு சுயஉதவி பெண்கள் குழுக்களுக்காக பணியாற்றியுள்ளேன்.

நான் கடத்தப்பட்ட சுக்மா மாவட்டம் மட்டுமல்லாது பக்கத்து மாவட்டங்களிலும் மக்கள் என்னை விடுவிக்க வலியுறுத்தி போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டார்கள். அந்த அளவு மக்கள் என் மீது அன்பு வைத்திருந்தார்கள். அரசியல்வாதிகள் கடத்தப்பட்டபோதெல்லாம் மக்களிடம் ஏற்படாத எழுச்சி நான் கடத்தப்பட்டபோதும் இன்னொரு கலெக்டர் கிருஷ்ணா கடத்தப்பட்டபோதும் மட்டுமே இத்தகைய எழுச்சி ஏற்பட்டது. சத்தீஸ்கர் மாநிலத்தில் தமிழர்களான பாரதிதாசன், பிரசன்னா, அன்பழகன், ஆர்.பிரசன்னா உள்பட ஐந்து பேர் கலெக்டர்களாக உள்ளோம். நேர்மையுடனும், உள்ளத்திடத்தோடும் பணியாற்றுவதில் தமிழர்களுக்கு நிகர் எவரும் இல்லை என்பதை புரிந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

என்னை கடத்தியதும் கம்யூனிஸ்ட்கள்,மீட்க உதவியதும் கம்யூனிஸ்ட்கள்தான் என்றார்கள். நான் சொல்கிறேன்..கடத்தப்பட்ட நானும் கம்யூனிஸ்ட்தான். நான் ஒரு உண்மையான கம்யூனிஸ்ட். சக மனிதனின் துக்கம் கண்டு பொங்குகிற, போராடுகின்ற யாருமே கம்யூனிஸ்ட்தான். இதனை செய்தியாளர்கள் பெரிதுபடுத்திவிடவேண்டாம். சத்தீஸ்கரில் இதனை தவறாக புரிந்துகொள்ளக்கூடாது. நான் கடத்தப்பட்டிருந்தபோது, ஏன் கடத்தினோம் என என்னிடம் மாவோயிஸ்ட்கள் மூன்று காரணங்களை தெரிவித்தனர். அங்கு போலீஸ் காவலில் நடந்த ஒரு இறப்பு குறித்தும், முன்பு பணியாற்றிய ஒரு எஸ்.பி.,க்கு ஜனாதிபதி விருது வழங்கப்பட்டதற்கு நான் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவிக்கவில்லை என கூறியும், அதிகாரிகள் நடத்திய ஒரு கூட்டம் குறித்தும் கேள்வி எழுப்பியிருந்தார்கள். அதற்கு நான் தெளிவான பதில் தந்தேன். போலீஸ் காவலில் நடந்த இறப்பிற்கு அதை விட யாரும் செய்யமுடியாதபடி மனித உரிமை ஆணையத்திற்கு தகவல் தெரிவித்து, தன்னிச்சையான டாக்டர்களால் பரிசோதனை செய்தது ஆகியவற்றை தெரிவித்தேன். மூன்று குற்றச்சாட்டுகளுக்கும் தெளிவான பதில் சொன்னதால் அவர்களால் எதுவும் செய்ய இயலவில்லை.

சுக்மா மாவட்டம் துவக்கப்பட்டு முதல் கலெக்டராக நியமிக்கப்பட்டிருந்ததால் அடிப்படை பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ளவேண்டியிருந்தது. நான்கு மாதங்களில் 4 ஆயிரத்து 500 பேருக்கு பட்டா வழங்கியுள்ளோம். 9 ஆயிரம் பேருக்கு அந்யோதயா திட்டத்தின் கீழ் உணவு உறுதியளித்துள்ளோம். 7 ஆயிரத்து 500 பேருக்கு வீடுகள் கட்டிதந்துள்ளோம். சவுக்கெடுத்து அடிக்காத குறையாத அதிகாரிகளை வேலை வாங்கி அனைத்து கிராமங்களிலும் ரேஷன் கடைகளை முறைப்படுத்தி வழங்கியுள்ளோம்.இதையெல்லாம் நான் அவர்களிடம் குறிப்பிட்டு என்னை ஏன் கடத்தினீர்கள் என்றேன். நேர்மைத்திறனோடு செயல்பட்டதால் மாவோயிஸ்ட்களின் துப்பாக்கிகளுக்கு மத்தியிலும் நான் பணியாற்றியதை பேசமுடிந்தது. ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் "அறச்சீற்றம்' இருக்கவேண்டும். இத்தகைய சீற்றம் வயிற்றில் எரிந்துகொண்டேயிருக்கவேண்டும். அப்போதுதான் வெற்றிபெற முடியும். சத்தீஸ்கரில் எனக்காக போராடிய மக்களை நினைத்து பார்க்கிறேன். அவர்களை நான் நிர்க்கதியாக விட்டு விட விரும்பவில்லை. எனவே நான் அந்த மக்களுக்காக தொடர்ந்து பணியாற்றுவேன். நான் அரசியலில் இணைவேனா என ஒரு நிருபர் கேட்டார். அத்தகைய எண்ணமில்லை. எனவே அவரிடம் நானே புதிய கட்சி ஆரம்பிக்கப்போகிறேன். ஏதாவது பெயர் இருந்தால் சொல்லுங்கள் என ஜாலியாக சொன்னேன். அந்த அடித்தட்ட மக்களுக்காக நான் தொடர்ந்து கலெக்டராக இருந்துகொண்டே போராடுவேன்.வெளியில் இருந்து அரசாங்கத்தை குறைசொல்வதை விட உள்ளே இருந்துகொண்டு பணியாற்றுவதுதான் சிறந்தது இவ்வாறு அலெக்ஸ்பால் மேனன் பேசினார்.

Remembering Mu’l’livaaykkaal is for edification of international community

Remembering Mu’l’livaaykkaal is not wailing for a tragedy. It is remembering the highest achievement of modern Tamil history, when Tamils decisively said no to an entire international community abetting a genocidal state. Mu’l’livaaykkaal is not an end of a journey. It calls for our massive re-commitment of collective political aspirations more than ever, as the Sri Lankan state has intensified its second phase of genocide, again aided by the international community, said Dr. Jude Lal Fernando, addressing Mu’l’livaaykkaal rememberance event in Dublin, Ireland, on Friday. Dr. Fernando, a Sinhalese currently lecturing and doing post-doctoral research in peace studies in Ireland was one of the main co-ordinators of the Dublin Permanent People’s Tribunal on Sri Lanka held in January 2010.

Dr. Fernando’s vantage of looking at Mu’l’livaaykkaal from a Tamil history perspective as well as from a universal perspective of the edification of the international community gains significance, when failed ‘peace facilitators’ like Erik Solheim of Norway, asserting that his view is the stand of the international community, denies the right of self-determination to Eezham Tamils despite the two phases of genocide, and asks them to “abide by the international community.”

There is no support for a new separate state in Sri Lanka or for the models of applying self-determination as in Southern Sudan and other examples, Solheim said in Oslo, a week ago.

“My opinion here is absolutely similar of the opinion of India, of the European Union and the United States of America. [...] – and of a broader western global community. It may not be the opinion of Iran or Pakistan or some other forces. But, it is most certainly the opinion of the influential parts of the international community in the United States and Europe,” Solheim, sharing stage with TNA parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran, asserted at the meeting organized by some diaspora Tamils.

How to reach out to the international community is to abide by the international community, Solheim advised Tamils.

“Frankly, there are two international politicians who have taken an interest in Sri Lanka from the West over the last three years. Bob Blake, the American Deputy Secretary of State and myself. We only get blame for this.” Solheim further said.

Eezham Tamil political observers, comparing the addresses of Solheim and Jude during the same week, said that if genocide and denial of right to self determination of the people is going to be the model of the so-called international community in implementing a new world order, then the edification of those who ideologically steer it is of utmost priority for the collective struggle of the masses, for the model is going to be a bane to entire human civilization.

Eezham Tamils having a case of life and death for themselves as a nation, and having a responsibility to the entire humanity in this respect, should realize what should not be compromised and where to address their struggle as a priority, the political observers further said.

Significantly, on Friday of the same week, C. Mahendran, a leader of a mass-based, All India political party, the Communist Party of India, highlighting the need of a collective mass struggle of Tamils in the island, in Tamil Nadu and in the diaspora for a referendum to democratically decide the political status of Eezham Tamils, said, “If Washington and New Delhi want to refuse our rights let them try.”

Full text of the address, Mullivaikkal – 2012, by Dr. Jude Lal Fernando in Dublin on 19 May 2012:

Today, as a people in exile, gathered in hundreds of thousands, whom do we remember and what do we remember? Are we here to remember a loss, a tragedy or a defeat that happened three years ago? I would say, no, none of these. We are here to remember the highest achievement of modern Tamil history. When the entire international community, due to pressure from the major powers opposed them and demanded them to give up our struggle, three years ago, on this day in 2009, facing the genocidal army of the Sri Lankan state, they decisively said no, they will not give up our struggle; instead, they will give up their lives. This is the highest achievement that a Tamil can reach in modern Tamil history. It is this achievement we remember today. Let this Remembrance Day reflect unity, not division among the Tamil people who share a common goal.

Hundreds of thousands of our dear ones were killed, because they belonged to a distinct nation, they were killed because they belonged to a particular land and joined a historical struggle.

And they were killed because all of them shared and many of them unconditionally stood for their collective political aspirations against the genocidal Sri Lankan state which was heavily aided by the major powers in the world.

These lives who never gave up their struggle are the reason for us to gather here today and where do we go from here? Some say Mullivaikkal marks the end of Tamil Eelam, but for us who uphold Mullivaikkal as the highest achievement in our journey towards national liberation struggle it becomes our moral compass, our power and our strength to reach our goal.

Therefore, let this day be the day that we re-commit ourselves as a people to the goal of self-determination, homeland and nationhood amidst pressures coming upon us in the name of realism and expediency in international diplomacy.

Let me quote Martin Luther King who once said:

Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic? Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But conscience asks the question - is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular; but one must take it because it is right.

Dr Fernando receiving the copy of a poetry book by the exiled writer Thirukumaran [left]. The book contains 68 poems which depict not only the pain and suffering but also the power of resistance. Some of these poems were read at the Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance event in Dublin.

A massive re-commitment to our collective political aspirations is needed more than ever before as the Sri Lankan state has intensified its second phase of genocide in the Tamil homeland today. The genocidal war continues today in the name of post-war reconstruction, again aided by the international community, through heavy militarisation and Sinhala colonisation and thereby altering the entire cultural, social and economic landscape of the Tamil people.

Amidst on-going arrests, disappearances, rapes, torture and killings the people in Tamil homeland continue to be resilient. For them Mullivaikkal is not an end of a journey.

In an open memorandum to the Tamil National Alliance they have clearly stated their collective political aspirations.

Let the memories of Mullivaikkal and the resilience of the people in the Tamil homeland inspire us and may the on-going genocide in Tamil homeland instil in us an urgency to hasten our journey towards freedom.

Tamil diaspora youth group condemns attack on JUSU leader

In a statement issued on Monday, the Global Tamil Youth League (GTYL), a diaspora youth group, said that the assault by a four-member squad on the secretary of the Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) on the day of Mu’l’livaaykkaal Remembrance was an attempt by the occupying Sri Lankan forces to instil fear in students and silence their voices for justice. The GTYL blamed the Government of Sri Lanka for targeting such remembrance events of Eezham Tamils with the aim of extinguishing the memory of the victims.

“The Sri Lankan government is trying to forcefully suppress our mourning as part of its genocidal agenda,” Braveen Nagendram spokesperson of the GTYL said, adding that the Human Rights Advocacy Council of the Canadian Tamil Youth Alliance would work with their member organisations in order to raise awareness about the ongoing attacks on the Tamil students in the homeland.

K. Tharshananth, a third year student at the Art Faculty of the Jaffna University, was attacked while he was making arrangements to observe Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance event at the University of Jaffna on Friday.

“Tharsananth, along with the Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU), were vocal about the need and democratic right to observe Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance – despite threats by the Sri-Lankan Military prohibiting such an event,” the GTYL release said.

“The Global Tamil Youth League (T-League) strongly condemns this act of intimidation and violence. It was an attempt to instill fear in students and silence their voices for justice. The atrocities carried out against the Tamils in Mu'l'livaaykkaal is a reality and cannot be denied or forgotten. Targeting remembrance events such as this is an attempt to extinguish the memory of the victims, and deny the ongoing genocide that is apparent today.”

“The final stage of genocide is the destruction of memory, and as Tamil youth around the world, we cannot allow that to happen. We will never forget the victims of Mu'l'livaaykkaal, and must work tirelessly to bring justice to our brothers and sisters who have suffered, and continue to fall prey to violence at the hands of the Sri Lankan Government.”

Sinhala-Buddhist temple opened to ‘celebrate’ genocide at Mu’l’livaaykkaal

Coinciding the third anniversary of Mu’l’livaaykkaal genocide, a secretly built Sinhala-Buddhist stupa was inaugurated at Vaddu-vaakal, the entrance to the Mu’l’livaaykkaal genocidal strip of land in Mullaiththeevu. As the Tamil public is yet to be allowed into the stretch of land, the building of the stupa at the genocidal site went unnoticed until its inauguration. Two weeks ago, Colombo opened a coastal road built by Chinese, linking Mu’l’livaaukkaal with Kokku’laay and Pulmoaddai where Sinhala colonisation takes place in high speed. Mu’l’livaaykkaal has already become a ‘tourist’ place for the Sinhalese from the South. While the ‘tourists’ and the Sinhala colonists using the new road are permitted to roam in the stretch of land, Tamils are not permitted to get out of the vehicles. The stupa, with an all-Sinhalese signboard has been built at the side of the new road.

The Sinhala-Buddhist stupa at Vadduvaakal at the entrance to the strip of Mu'l'livaaykkaal. While the Tamil public was not allowed to enter the region, the stupa was secretely built and inaugurated recently.

Vaddu-vaakal where the Sinhala-Buddhist stupa is built is the spot from where one enters the Mu’l’li-vaaykkaal strip from the southern side. The place is also close to Vattaap-pazhai, the famous pilgrim centre of Eezham Tamils in Vanni.

Buddhist temples are recently opened at Saiva sacred places in Mannaar and Trincomalee. The Jaffna city itself will be welcoming visitors from the seaside with a massive Buddhist stupa.

The Chinese-built coastal highway linking Pulmoaddai, Kokku’laay and Mullaiththeevu with Mu’l’livaaykkaal will be extended further north along the coast, up to Point Pedro in the northern tip of Jaffna.

All along this coast, Sinhala fishermen have already been brought by the occupying military.

The master plan to Sinhalicize all the coasts of Eezham Tamils to imprison them permanently in their land, is implemented with open nakedness.

The Tamil memory of the genocide is ridiculed with open contempt by the Sinhala military celebrating victory at Palaali and the Sinhala-Buddhists building a ‘temple’ at the strip of land where the genocide was committed.

While any hoodwink from India, USA and the West about finding solution within ‘united Sri Lanka’ is openly and hurriedly countered and pre-empted by the structural genocide of the Sinhala state to make such solutions totally meaningless, the question that who among them are the real culprits is now widely asked by Eezham Tamils.

General of genocide released in Colombo

Sri Lanka’s former military commander General Sarath Fonseka, who led the Sinhala military in the ‘international community’ –abetted genocidal war against the Eezham Tamils, has been released by the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime in Colombo on Monday. While the so-called international community reducing the genocide into mere war crimes, now verbally demands investigation into the ‘war crimes’, the general who led the war and later imprisoned because Rajapaksa found him a challenge, was considered by the USA as a ‘political prisoner.’ His release on that count was always demanded by the USA, the main architect of the war. Fonseka during the war declared that Sri Lanka belongs to the Sinhalese. He also ridiculed the politicians of Tamil Nadu protesting the war as ‘jokers’.

According to sections of the so-called international media that did nothing during the genocide, the release of the commander of the crimes-accused war would ‘improve’ Sri Lanka’s international image and would prompt more foreign inflows. They cited ‘investors’ welcoming the release.

Jubilant Sinhala masses welcoming his release as a release of the ‘war hero’ while Tamils remember the third anniversary of the genocide with bereavement, is a message clearly addressed to India and the USA that unrealistically uphold unity of state in the island, Tamil political observers said.

It is also a message for those who naively thing that the so-called IC could achieve war crimes investigation in the island. Delivery of justice is more important than investigation and war crimes justice in the case of the island is nothing but secession, the political observers further said.

In October last year, writing an article “Scapegoating of a General” and defending Maj. Gen. Shavendra Silva, Sri Lanka’s war crimes accused representative at the UN, Jehan Perera, a Sinhala lawyer heading a Colombo-based outfit National Peace Council of Sri Lanka came out with a ‘universal’ argument that war crimes are justifiable “to preserve order in the world.”

“The harsh choices that sometimes have to be made by government leaders in the fight to preserve order in the world is why Sri Lanka’s own war has much to offer the world in terms of lessons learnt,” said Jehan Perera, whose outfit was getting Norwegian foreign ministry funds for three consecutive years between 2009-2011.

LJP President Paswan backs call for UN referendum

Ram Vilas Paswan, the president of Lok Janshakthi Party from the state of Bihar and a former Indian minister, took part in a candlelight vigil organized near the Kannagi statue at the Marina Beach, Chennai by May 17 Movement on Sunday and signed on the list of the signature campaign calling for UN referendum among Eezham Tamils to assert their political destiny. Mr. Paswan, a Rajya Sabha MP, talking to media also said that Tamils had mandated the creation of Tamil Eelam in 1977 elections, which was based upon Vaddukkoaddai Resolution of all Tamil parties that represented Tamils in the island. The Sri Lankan state has not only ignored Eezham Tamils' democratic mandate, but has also systematically unleashed violence on them.

The LJP leader, while talking to media, said what happened in the island was not only war crimes but a systematic and intentional crime of genocide.

Mr. Paswan lit the ceremonial lamp in honour of those killed in May 2009.

The people who took part in the candlelight vigil, jointly organised by 17 May movement and Periyar Dravida Kazhakam (PDK), raised slogans that they would neither forget nor forgive the genocide of the people of Tamil Eelam.

The event saw the participation of Veteran Tamil political activist Pazha Nedumaran, Vaiko of MDMK, Eezham Tamil poet Kasi Anandan, Vanniarasu from the VCK, Kolathur Mani and Viduthalai Rajendran from the PDK, among others

The organisers said the police was blocking many participants from attending the event, which was well attended by civil society activists and the public.

The main demands of the event were that there should be an independent international inquiry into the genocide of the Eezham Tamils and that a UN-monitored referendum must be conducted among the Eezham Tamils to allow them to determine their political future.

"At a time when popular pressure is building among the people of Tamil Nadu for justice for the Eezham Tamils, it would be a right step for TN govt to react on the issue by passing a resolution recognizing the genocide and calling for a UN referendum," Thirumurugan Gandhi told TamilNet.   Likewise, other participants at the event said that DMK leader Karunanidhi should use his party's presence in the parliament to try to bring about a change in India's foreign policy on similar lines.

Mu’l’livaaykkaal remembered as symbol of protest in Australia, Canada

Exhibiting a spirit of commitment to the Tamil Eelam freedom struggle and seeking to undo defeatist mentalities of some in the diaspora, Eezham Tamil youth in Australia and Canada organized Mu’l’livaaykkaal remembrance events in their countries as symbolizing Tamil resistance to oppression and genocide, on Friday and Saturday respectively. Speaking to TamilNet, the organizers asserted that Mu’l’livaaykkaal was not a time to weep and mourn, but an occasion to remember the heroic deeds of those who went down fighting for freedom though a genocidal army assaulted them without respite with the aid of world powers, and an occasion to pledge commitment to the ideals of struggle for Tamil Eelam.

Speaking to TamilNet, Seran Sribalan, Tamil youth activist from Australia said “Throughout the history of Tamil Eelam struggle, we have seen different types of problems and atrocities. But the Tamil resistance was able to overcome it. Similarly with Mu’l’livaaykkaal. While the occasion tells the world about the genocide of our people, it also reminds us that we will continue to fight till Tamil Eelam is won.”

On Friday, a full capacity crowd of Tamils gathered at the Bahai centre in Sydney to remember the May massacre, three years ago in their homelands. Meena Krishnamoorthy, who was eye witness to the war crimes of the Sri Lankan state, talked about her harrowing experiences in that period.

Senator Lee Rhiannon from the Greens Party, a mainstream Australian political outfit that has principally stood by struggle of the Eezham Tamils, expressed regret at the conditions of Tamil refugees in Australia, and pledged her party’s solidarity to Tamils in Australia fighting for the rights of the same.

Thiru Kathiravel from the TYO stressed the importance for the youth to move forward without compromising the goals of the struggle.

The Australia TYO had also organized an awareness campaign on Friday noon named “G for Genocide” to inform people of the situation in the Tamil homeland.

TYO Canada organized Tamil Uprising Day to mark Mu’l’livaaykkaal remembrance at Queen’s Park, near the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, on Saturday, drawing huge crowds mainly from second generation Eezham Tamil youth in Canada.

The event was titled “Tamil Uprising Day” to symbolize that events to mark Mu’l’livaaykkaal should be used to remember, commemorate and take a vow upon thousands that were brutally killed there that the founding principles of the Tamil freedom struggle namely; nation, homeland and the right to self determination struggle will not be compromised, the organizers of the event told TamilNet, adding that this was imperative at a time when certain sections of the diaspora have marked Mu’l’livaaykkaal remembrance with mourning alone.

Speaking at the event, Vijay Than from TYO Canada opined that the memory of Mu’l’livaaykkaal must be used a catalyst to advance the struggle of the Tamil nation and that should further strengthen the resolve of the Tamils to work towards the liberation of Tamil Eelam.

"There can be no peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka without justice and self-determination in Tamil Eelam. There will be no peace until the genocide stops; there will be no peace without national liberation; there will be no peace until the Sri Lankan Armed Forces leaves our land and our skies," said Krisna Saravanamuttu, spokesperson of the National Council of Canadian Tamils.

"There is an international revolution brewing amongst the youth and students in the diaspora and the homeland. We reject the unitary state of Sri Lanka and therefore condemn the genocide, ethnic cleansing, and colonization of occupied Tamil Eelam,” he added.

James Clarke from the Canadian Peace Alliance, Canada’s largest peace organization, also affirmed the solidarity of his group with the cause of the Eezham Tamils.
