Badurdeen supporters grab Tamil lands in Mannaar

Rifghan Badurdeen, a brother of SL minister Rishad Badurdeen and his supporters have been grabbing lands of Tamils situated in Thalaimannaar Pier, complain landowners in the area. Several landowners have lodged complaints with the SL police and the Sri Lankan Human Rights Commission in Mannaar. But, there has been no action against the illegal land grab by the SL minister who has been causing disharmony among the peoples belonging to different religions. Civil officials in Mannaar have forwarded one of the complaints made in December 2012 to media, exposing the culprits behind the illegal encroachment.

Mr Badurdeen men are engaged in grabbing lands of Tamils in Thalai-mannaar area in Mannaar DS division and in Maanthai West DS division, civil officials in Mannaar say.

The SL minister has instructed the police not entertain such complaints, the officials further said.

Badurdeen’s men have been encroaching into palm groves in Thalai-mannaar while the SL military is also grabbing lands in Ezhuththoor GS division in Mannaar causing panic among the villagers. Similar incidents signaling a systematic land grab have also been reported at Kuthiraik-kea’ni and Paalameen-oadai, and in Maanthai West.

Sinhala land-grabbers trigger abduction of Tamil youth in Batticaloa

Armed men of allegedly Sri Lanka Army operated white-van squad Wednesday night have abducted a 20-year-old Tamil youth, Kishore Ramachandran, while the youth was at sleep at his house at mid-night. The abduction comes following threats to the Tamil family at Paalcheanai in Kathirave'li of Vakkarai region in Batticaloa district by Sinhalese to hand over their 8 acres of palm grove with more than 1,500 trees, owned by the family for more than 40 years. On 19 March, a police team claiming as investigative officers from 4th floor CID branch in Colombo came to their house and took away a copy of the land deed. Following the involvement of the CID on the land grab issue, the family lodged a complaint with Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission in Batticaloa. After the abduction, the family has lodged a complaint with the SL Police.

The abductors had warned the family against any complaint and had instructed the family to remain tight-lipped on the abduction.

A number of Tamil land-owners in Paalchenai area have come under similar threats by Sinhalese intruders who were demanding the Tamils to either sell or hand-over the lands to them.

The Sri Lankan military, police and the intelligence establishment bring the intruders from South to the Vaakarai region of Batticaloa district.

Vaakarai, with a large backwater on the east coast, is an area with fertile fields, lagoons and virgin forests in the northern part of the Batticaloa district.

Buddhist vihares grab Tamil lands for Sinhalicisation in Trincomalee

Hundreds of acres of lands are being alienated to Buddhist Vihares in Trincomalee district on the instruction of the Colombo government and at the request of the heads of such Vihares, civil sources in Trincomalee told TamilNet. After the war, the SL military-led administration in the district had allocated initially 2 acres per new Buddhist stupa in Tamil areas at Pulmoaddai, Ilaththik-ku'lam, Thiriyaay, Chempiyan-malai in Kuchchave'li DS division. Later, more lands are being allocated at the request of the heads of these Vihares, who aim Sinhalicisation of the Tamil areas. Informed sources said upto 400 acres have been alienated for this purpose.

Most of the lands allocated to the Buddhist Vihares belong to Tamil people who were uprooted from the area.

An entire division named Kadduk-ku'lam pattu, which was earlier under the administration of a Tamil administrative officer when it was a DRO division, was subjected to systematic demographic change. It has now become four separate divisions, Padaviya, Periya Vizhang-ku'lam (Sinhalicised to Morawewa), Gomarankadawala and Kuchchave'li.

Except Kuchchave'li, the other 3 divisions have been Sinhalicised.

Now, after the war, Kuchchave'li is also being systematically targeted for Sinhalicisation, the civil officials said.

Civil sources further alleged that the Sinhala occupiers are engaged in destroying Hindu temples now and recalled how the old Giri Kanda Vihare in Thiriyaay was protected by the Tamil Tigers when the area was under their control.

In the meantime, encroachment of the lands of Tamil people is taking place in large scale along Trincomalee-Kandy highway and Trincomalee-Anuradhapura highway, the sources further said.

SL military appropriates 54 acres of Palaali Training College [TamilNet, Sunday, 25 December 2011, 20:46 GMT] Sri Lankan Defence Ministry has set afoot plans for grabbing the lands of Palaali Teachers Training College, one of the two key academic institutions of Tamil teachers in the North, for military purposes. The latest move by Colombo to appropriate the 54 acres of the land situated near the Palaali airport in the High Security Zone and to possibly annex the personnel of the institution with Koappaay training college, has drawn severe reactions from the educationalist and academic circles as well as the civil society in the North. The training college at Palaali was displaced in 1990, following the military operations by the Sri Lanka Army in Valikaamam North. The college, providing training in various fields such as Science, Mathematics and language, was moved to the private school building of Muththuthampi viththiyaalayam at Thirunelveali in Jaffna and has been functioning there without basic facilities. Many teachers from East, including Muslims, undergo training in both the training colleges in North. Koappaay Teachers' Training College in Valikaamam East is located 400 meters from Irupaalai junction, situated 6 km north of Jaffna city.
