78,000 affected by floods in Batticaloa, Ampaa'rai, 46 DS divisions under water

The normalcy in the districts of Ampaa'rai and Batticaloa in the Eastern province has been severely disrupted due to heavy rain with strong winds. 300mm rain was recordered in the Ampaa'rai district on Friday and 230 mm rain in Batticaloa district, according to Meteorological sources. One fatality was registered at Poaratheevup-pattu in Batticaloa district. Totally, 78,467 persons have been affected in both the districts, officials said adding that 21 DS divisions in Ampaa'rai district and 14 DS divisions in Batticaloa district have been under water for several hours. 35 families were rescued from an entire village, Veaththuch-cheanai, that has been submerged in floods in Vellaave'li division of Batticaloa district. All transport from Batticaloa city to Paduvaankarai and Vaakarai regions has come to a standstill.

Thousands of acres of paddy crops awaiting harvest at any time have been submerged in flood water in the two districts.

The transport to the Vaakarai has been completely cut off due to the collapse of the Panichchangkea'ni Bridge that leads to Koa'ralaip-pattu North.

Reports further said that Chiththaa'ndi, Mu'rakkoddaangn-chenai and Maavadi-vempu villages in the Ea'raavoor-Chengkaladi DS division have been submerged in flood water.

Thousands of people have been displaced seeking refuge in houses belonging to their relatives and friends.

A vehicle was washed away by flood water while on its way to Anuradhapura at Black Bridge along Ma'ndoor-Vellaave'li Road Friday around 5:00 a.m.

Twenty four persons travelling in the vehicles were rescued and the vehicle was also recovered later.

All roads that lead to Paduvaan-karai through Ka'luvaagnchik-kudi Bridge, Amplaanthu'rai Road, Vavu'na-theevu Bridge, Manmunai Road, Kiraan Bridge and Chanthive'lith-thu'rai remain closed due to the floods.

77 houses have been fully destroyed and 157 houses have sustained damage, according to the data registered so far, according to disaster management officials in both the districts.

More rain is expected in the coming days, according to disaster management officials in the East.

101,569 members of 28,297 families in five districts Mullaiththeevu, Ki'linochchi, Vavuniyaa, Mannaar and Jaffna in the Northern Province have been badly affected by the torrential rain. Of them about 35,000 members of over 10 thousand families have been sheltered in transit centres. Over twenty thousand houses have been damaged completely and partially due to the rain and flood, according statistics provided by the officials attached to the Disaster Management Unit. Mullaiththeevu district is the worst affected one in the Northern Province where 36,019 persons of 11,261 families have been affected.

60,796 persons from 2147 families Oddu-chuddaan DS division, 16,899 persons from 5,336 families in Puthukkudiyiruppu DS division, 8,063 persons from 2,338 families in Karaithu'raip-pattu, 3,359 members from 1,143 families in Thu'nukkaay DS division, 857 persons from 277 families in Maanthai East DS division and 45 persons from 20 families Ma'nal-Aa'ru (Weli Oya) DS division have been displaced and are being sheltered in 50 transit centres.

Roads in Vavuniyaa, Mullaiththeevu, Oddu-chuddan and Puthukkudiyiruppu are under several feet of flood bringing the transport to a standstill.

In Mullaiththeevu alone 16,150 houses have been badly damaged.

In Ki'linochchi district 2,068 families residing in three DS divisions, Karaichchi, Kandaa-va'lai and Poonakari have been badly affected.

Of them 1,228 families have been rendered homeless.

1,381 persons from 344 families have been sheltered in 9 transit centres in Karaichchi DS division, 2,430 persons from 702 families in Kandaava'lai DS division in 14 transit centres, and 582 persons from 182 families in Poonakari DS division in 25 transit centres.

According to SL Government Agent of Ki'lnochchi district Ms Rupavathi Keetheesvaran 4,373 persons from 1,228 families are sheltered in transit centres. She said cooked meals and essential services are provided to these displaced.

In Vavuniyaa district, 34,170 persons from 9,123 families have been affected. 6,919 persons from 1,865 families in Cheddi-ku'lam DS division, 26,341 persons from 6,714 families in Nedungkea'ni DS division, and 819 persons from 514 families in Vavuniyaa Sinhala DS division have been affected and they are sheltered in 67 transit centres, according to Assistant Director of Disaster Management Unit Janaka Jayewardene.

In Mannaar district 23,300 persons from 5,865 families have been affected.

906 persons from 248 families in Mannaar DS division, 12,868 persons from 2,960 families Musali DS division, 6,471 persons from 405 families in Madu DS division, 4,093 persons from 1,138 families in Nanaaddaan DS division, and 3,942 persons from 1,105 families in Maanthai West DS division have been affected.

Transport between Mannaar,-Jaffna and Mannaar-Madawachchiya has come to halt due to heavy flood.

Land route to Musali area has been disrupted.

People in Vidathaltheevu have been rescued from flood by boats due to efforts made by the the district secretariat and irrigation officials.

211 GS divisions in Batticaloa district have been affected by floods that have caused displacement of 190,966 members of 51,379 families in one week, civil officials at Batticaloa district secretariat said. Four persons were reported dead, one injured and two others have been reported missing in the floods. More than 4,000 houses were damaged. 30% of 155,000 acre paddy cultivation has been destroyed. 25,000 fishermen have lost their livelihood and families engaged in firewood and bricks making have lost their expected income. Several hundred heads of cattle have been washed away by the floods and those engaged in animal husbandry have lost their income, according to Department of Animal Husbandry sources.

11,530 members from 3,459 families have been staying in 34 transit centres as displaced, according to Disaster Management Unit in Batticaloa. 51,770 members of 14,323 families have been staying with their relatives and friends as displaced.

Those affected people by the rain and flood have not been provided with any assistance by the Colombo government despite some NGOs assisting them to resume their normal life in a little way, DMU sources said.

250,000 metric tonnes of paddy produce were expected this Maha season, according to R.Hariharan, District Assistant Director of Agriculture.

About 45,000 acres with paddy crops were under flood water for several days. Forty percent of minor crops such as maize, chilli, green grams and other crops were also destroyed due to flood.

4,035 houses were damaged due to one week long heavy rain and flood.

Of them 1,261 houses were completely damaged and 2,774 partially destroyed.

5,134 members of 1,690 families have been displaced and kept in transit centres due to floods following the breach of the Malwaththu Oya in the Mannaar district, according to the Mannaar Disaster Management Unit Assistant Director M.A.C.Riyaz. The water released from Malwaththu Oya from Anuradhapura flows through Aruvi Aa'ru in Mannaar district causing deluge in several villages in the district.

4,488 members of 1,540 Tamil families in Maduk-karai village were displaced seeking refuge in Nanaaddan Maha Vidiyalayam.

646 persons from 150 Tamil families, displaced from Naanaaddaan and Thampuma'nik-ku'lam in Madu DS division were kept in another school.

Transport from Kugnchuk-kul'am village in Madu DS division to other areas is cut off for the last two days due to ten feet of flood overflowing from Aruvi Aaru.

More than 1,400 persons living in the village are also suffering without food and other basic facilities.
