Knowledge of migration  birds

In a prose book prescribed for the studies of the U.G.students there is an English Essay that deals with the Migration of birds. It is not something new to the Tamils.

In ancient Sangam age, the Tamils had the knowledge of migration  birds. In the chapter No 23, the author has made a mention of it. The Tamil Poets have mentioned three types of migration as PUTUPPUḶ – Migrated birds from other countries; PAḺAM PUḶ Pōkiṉum -  the birds migrated to other places and The birds which never migrate to other area as Vati

SCIENCE OF ECONOMICS

The thoughts of modern economists are seen in the Sangam literature.  In the chapters from 24 to 29 the author has elaborately explained the Tamils knowledge of economics even 2000 years back.

Modern Economist talked about the Positive Science/Positive Economics and Normative Science/Normative Economics. World Poet Thiruvalluvar says in Thirukkural couplet 660 that wealth obtained by foul means is like preserving a vessel of wet clay by filling it with water. And he says that the wealth of him who is disliked (by all) is like the fruit-bearing of the etty tree in the midst of a town. Accordings to the Tamils Wealth should be earn by virtual ways and should spent for good purposes.

Like these principles the Tamils emphasised the positive economics and oppose the normative economics.

SCIENCE OF LANGUAGES

Death of a Language occurs when it lost its usage. The life of the language is in the body of it – ie. the letters and numbers( scripts). To save the language we should save our litterature. To save the literature we should save the alphabets of the language. If there is no alphabets there is no words and then there is no usage of it.

The  author advised not to destroy the letters and numbers of languages to safe guard them. By refereing to Tirukkuṟaḷ No.392 he emphasises it.

Eṇṇeṉpa ēṉai eḻutteṉpa ivviraṇṭum

kaṇṇeṉpa vāḻum uyirkku.

(The twain that lore of numbers and of letters give
Are eyes, the wise declare, to all on earth that live.)

Usage of clocks before the begining of the christian era

An instrument to indicate the time is a clock. Peter Henlein, a Locksmith and Clockmaker of Nuremberg, Germany, is the inventor of the watch. In the year 1656 Christiaan Huygens invented the clock with a pendulam. In the chapter No 31 the author has explained that the clock came into use 2000 years back.

Our ancestors called it KUṞUNĪR KAṈṈAL – a small bowl water clock. Later on they invented an ornamental type  of clock to be worn around the neck. In the Kanta purāṇam, the poet has mentioned about a clock by name Arumpuṉal kuṭikai  (அரும்புனல் குடிகை). (Here the word அரும்புனல் (arumpuṉal) means water dripping through the finest pores.  The word puṉal means water, arum means fine. The word kuṭikai  means clock.)

toḻutu kāṇkaiyar tōṉṟa vāḻtti

eṟi nīr vaiyakam velī'iya celvōy niṉ

kuṟu nīrk kaṉṉal iṉaittu eṉṟu icaippa

பொழுது அளந்து – calculating time, அறியும் – knowing, பொய்யா மாக்கள் – unfailing men, தொழுது – worships, காண் கையர் – men with hands that can be seen (கூப்பிய கையினர்), தோன்ற வாழ்த்தி – praised greatly, எறி நீர் – ocean with splashing waves, வையகம் – earth, வெலீஇய – to win, செல்வோய் – O one who goes, நின் – your, குறு நீர் கன்னல் – bowl with little water (water clock), இனைத்து – what time it is, என்று இசைப்ப – they utter]

[குறுநீர்க் கன்னல் எண்ணுதல் அல்லது
கதிர்மருங்கு அறியா அஞ்சுவரப் பாஅய்

Kuṟunīrk kaṉṉal eṇṇutal allatu

 – AKANĀṈŪṞU43.6-7

[குறு நீர்க் கன்னல் எண்ணுநர் அல்லது – AKANĀṈŪṞU 43.6 - without those who count time with a small-bowl water clock, ]

(Here the author says that  even in those days when the sun is hidden by clouds or blocked by rain etc.  our ancestors could determine the time and know the time with water clocks) ]

Knowledge of marriage registration

In chapter No 16, the author wonders about the practice of marriage registration. The registration of marriage come to be in vogue in the year 1653, in England. In the years of 1964 and 1979, the UNO made the registration of marriage compulsory.

In the dim past the Tamils lay stress on the registration of marriages. The Tamil GRAMMARIAN TOLKĀPPIYAR in his book TOLKĀPPIYAM has mentioned about it. Our ancestors did things before the peoples of other lands could think of them/

DR.S.Ilakkuvanar a doyen in Tamil literature, who translated TOLKĀPPIYAM into English revealed the fact about the practice of marriage registration.

Science of Planets

The Tamils named the planets by their natural quality. But the Greeks, the Romans and others clung  to some imaginary and irrational myths about planets. For example, the author speaks about saturn in the 17th chapter.

The saturn is called SANI which means a cold planet. It is called  MAIM'MĪṈ  which means black planet.

Another name they had for saturn is KARIYAVAṈ. It means the planet which has got a black colour.  MANTAṈ  is another name for SATURN. It means slow revolving planet.

So we learn that our ancestors had the knowledge of the climate, colour and the speed of Saturn.

The Knowledge of Comet

In the chapter No 18 the author  has explained the small Solar System – i.e. Comet. Its Greek name is KOMETES. It means long hair. Another meaning for kometes is tail. A Comet when passing close to the Sun, releases  gases and its trailing gases like hair or tail.

Nowadays, The Tamils also calls it as VĀL NAṬCATTIRAM – a star which has got a tail.

But the Tamils who lived 2000 years back had the knowledge of this celestral body. They never called  Comet  a Star. They called it TŪMAM and PUKAIKKOṬI  by the virtue of releasing gas and dust. the planets as follow

[In the poem No.117 of Puṟanāṉūṟu. Poet KAPILAR MENTIONED the planets as follows:

மைம்மீன் புகையினும் தூமம் தோன்றினும்
தென் திசை மருங்கின் வெள்ளி ஓடினும்

Maim'mīṉ pukaiyiṉum tūmam tōṉṟiṉum

teṉ ticai maruṅkiṉ veḷḷi ōṭiṉum ]

Swimming dress and platform

Swimming came under the catagory of sports only in19th century. In the year 1891, Spring Board was introduced in swimming. In the year  1901 it was included in the list of the events of Olympic games. Then Driving platforms came into use. But 2000 years back, the Tamils used NĪRAṆI MĀṬAM – Upper platform for diving into water.

[நீர் அணி காண்போர் நிரை மாடம் ஊர்குவோர்

Nīr aṇi kāṇpōr nirai māṭam ūrkuvōr – Paipaadal 10.27]

They called two-piece dress as Īraṇi, i.e. two wears.

In Akanāṉūṟu(166-13; 266.5), Paripāṭal(6.28; 22.18; 10.27) the poets mentioned the Īraṇi.

SCINECE OF COINS

There are many references to gold coins in Sangam literature. The author quotes the lines from  Tirumurukāṟṟuppaṭai(16), Akanāṉūṟu(315.10-13),    Kuṟuntokai  (67.1-4; 18.1-3; 274.1-2), Naṟṟiṇai(274.1-2) and Kalittokai(85.3-4) and explains the gold coins that were in use in the chapter No. 20.

SCIENCE OF IRRIGATION

The author described the science of irrigation which was in vogue  2000 yeras back in the chapter No. 22.

The author has explained about the kallaṇai - a dam built 2000 years back on river kaveri- by the Cōḻa emperor  Karikāl Peruvaḷattāṉ.

Poet Muṭattāmak kaṇṇiyār mentioned in her poem (puṟanāṉūṟu  18) that those who blocked abundant water or who created water reservoirs will control the world; those who don't control the  abundant water have not controlled this world. By this golden lines she emphasise the kings to built water reservoirs for irrigations. The author has explained this poem.

SCIENCE OF WIND

In the year 1806 Sir Francis Beaufort differentiated the air by its speed and nature. But 2000 years back the Tamils had mentioned many types of air.

Piṅkala nikaṇṭu(Thesaurus) gives a list of various types of winds as Vaṅkūḻ, maruntu, calaṉaṉ,  vāṭai, vaḷi, kōtai, vātam, kūtai, vēṟṟalam, kāl, oli, uyir, kālili,viṇṭu, nīḷai,ulavai,koṇṭal,kōṭai, niḻali and uyirppu.

They differenciated the air according to the directions from which they blow.

Air from the South is TEṈṞAL

Air from the North is VĀṬAI

Air from the West is KŌṬAI

Air frot the East is KOṆṬAL

According to the chillness it is differentiated as

Kūtir(Tholkappiyam.Porul. 6)  -  Chill wind

Ūtai  - shivery wind

kulir – air of Coldness

Acording to the spead and the strength air,  the Tamils differentiated them as shown below

Cil kāṟṟu (Maturaikkāñci line 358)   - Chill wind

Kaṭuṅkāṟṟu (Maturaikkāñci 378) - Gale-force wind

Peruṅkāṟṟu  (kalittokai 45.4)- Strong breeze

Cuḻal kāṟṟu (NaṟṟiṇaiPoem 37, line 7) - Cyclone

Kaṭuṅkāl  (Patiṟṟuppattu Poem 17, line12)  - Violent wind

Taṇkāl  (Puṟanāṉūṟu poem 396, line5) -  cool breeze

The author has explained it in the chapter No.12.

Knowledge of space DEVOID OF air

From the chapter 13, we come to know that the Tamils were well informed of the knowledge of space.

There are many levels of atmosphere above the earth. Atmosphere exists only upto a certain altitude. The content of air gets reduced as the altitude increases.

Beyond a particular altitude there is no air but vaccum.

Modern scientists came to know this truth quite recently.

But Poet VEḶḶAIKKUṬI NĀKAṈĀR in the poem No.35, lines 1-5, in Puṟanāṉūṟu  pointed about the fact tha there is no air beyond a particular altitude above the earth in the space above.

[ Poet Vellaikudi Nākanār sang to the King Chōlan KUḶAMUṞṞATTUT TUÑCIYA KIḶḶI VAḶAVAṈ as shown below:

In this dense world where winds cannot penetrate,

decorated with the sky, with huge ocean as its limits,

Among the three who rule over the cool Tamil land with

roaring drums and armies, your royalty alone is true !

Naḷi'iru munnīr ēṇi yāka,

vaḷi'iṭai vaḻaṅkā vāṉam cūṭiya

maṇtiṇi kiṭakkait taṇtamiḻk kiḻavar,

muracu muḻaṅku tāṉai mūvar uḷḷum,

aracu'eṉap paṭuvatu niṉatē, peruma!]

[valiyidai vazhangaa vaanam –Space devoid of air]

And in Puṟanāṉūṟu (Poem 365), Poet MĀRKKAṆṬĒYAṈĀR has spoken about the sky or space where there is no air as ‘NĪTTAM’ . Nīttam means the space, far above the atmosphere.

Knowledge of bonsai breeding

In the chapter No 14 the author has explained that Tamil people had the knowledge of the miniature trees – bonsai.

An anonymous poet in the poem No 165 in Akanāṉūṟu has mentioned about the bonsai of blue lilies as  TĀḺIKKUVAḶAI – that is blue flowers in the pot.

STREET NAME BOARDS

Street name boards came into use in 1870 only. Malaipaṭukaṭām is a long Tamil poem composed 3000 years back. (i.e. before Tholkappiyar period) . The author in the chapter No. 15, has revealed the fact about the name board through a line from this classical poem.

செல்லும் தேஎத்து பெயர் மருங்கு அறிமார்

Cellum tē'ettu peyar maruṅku aṟimār

kal eṟintu eḻutiya nal arai marā'atta - Malaipaṭukaṭām, lines 394-395

To know the direction of one’s destination,

It was etched on stone.

In many out side places they had the habit of  tying a tuft of  the grass in the juncion after cleaning the area to identify the place.
