STATERRORISM IN SRI LANKA : Reporters Without Borders urge Mahinda Rajapaksa

STATERRORISM IN SRI LANKA

Reporters Without Borders urge Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka to protect ‘The Sunday Leader’ Editor Frederica Jansz

3rd  November 2011, 6:36 am
Reporters Without Borders has written an open letter to Sri Lanka's Mahinda Rajapaksa urging him to take whatever measures are necessary to protect Frederica Jansz, the editor of The Sunday Leader, and to ensure that those responsible for last week’s death threats against her are arrested.
The threatening letter Jansz received on 27 October was prompted by her 2009 interview with Gen. Sarath Fonseka, a former army commander and presidential candidate in 2010, in which Fonseka accused defence minister Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of ordering soldiers to kill Tamil Tiger rebels who wanted to surrender. This is not the first time Jansz has been threatened.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa
Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
Temple Trees
Colombo 3, Sri Lanka

31 October 2011
Dear Mr. Rajapaksa,
Reporters Without Borders, an international organization that defends freedom of information, would like to share with you its concern about the threats received last week by Frederica Jansz, the editor of The Sunday Leader.
On 27 October, Ms. Jansz received an anonymous hand-written letter claiming to come from the “Sinha regiment.” It criticized her for her involvement in the “White Flag” trial, in which a verdict is due on 18 November. Ms. Jansz is regarded as a key witness in this trial because of the front page story she wrote for the newspaper on 13 December 2009.
It was an interview with former army commander Gen. Sarath Fonseka, in which he told Ms. Jansz that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had given the order to kill three members of the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) who wanted to surrender. Many officers saw this statement as a betrayal. Gen. Fonseka, who subsequently said his comments were taken out of context, is being tried for making false statements.
The Sinha regiment that seems to be threatening Ms. Jansz used to be commanded by Gen. Fonseka when he was a senior army officer. The regiment is accusing her of providing the judicial system with false evidence.
This is not the first time that Ms. Jansz has been target of such threats. The first threats were received shortly after she had provided the evidence. The Sunday Leader’s journalists are often the targets of all sorts of intimidation. We remind you of the January 2009 murder of the newspaper’s then editor, Lasantha Wickrematunga, which was never properly investigated.
Ms. Jansz filed a complaint with the police after receiving this letter. So far, she has received no protection. As a verdict will soon be issued, we are extremely concerned for Ms. Jansz’s safety during the days and weeks to come.
Although more than two years have gone by since the army’s victory over the Tamil Tigers, media freedom and pluralism have not improved in Sri Lanka, as The Sunday Leader’s precarious situation shows. The chairman of the TNL media group, Shan Wickremesinghe, and its general manager, Sudath Jayasundara, have also received death threats from individuals with close connections to your government. We are worried about the safety of Sri Lankan journalists, who are working in an increasingly fraught environment and are caught between the different forces – political and non-political – operating in your country
We therefore urge you to give orders for these threats to be properly investigated and to take whatever measures are necessary to ensure that they stop. The Sri Lanka authorities should also be ready to provide proper protection to Ms. Jansz or any other journalist if they desire it.
I thank you for the attention you give to this letter.
Sincerely,
Jean-François Julliard
Reporters Without Borders secretary-general

Consequences of Tamil genocide engulf entire island: Bahu

Consequences of Tamil genocide engulf entire island: Bahu

[TamilNet, Saturday, 22 October 2011, 12:44 GMT]
The regime of state terror, which started in the Tamil homeland has now become a menace everywhere in the island. The state terrorism, created on the basis of Sinhala chauvinism, is for a purpose; that is to assist certain neo liberal forces involved in plunder of resources, said Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne, the general secretary of the NSSP, who took oath as the newly elected Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) member for the Dehiwala Mount Lavinia municipal council on Friday. “So-called development of the government is based on displacement of people and plunder of resources. While people are pushed out of their traditional habitat land, marine resources, minerals and earth resources, forest, water resources etc., are taken over by the neo liberal developers. World powers that supported the genocidal war are happy and satisfied about the situation,” Dr. Karunaratne further said.

Eight elected members from the DPF led by Colombo Municipal Councillor Mano Ganesan took oaths before senior lawyers SG Punchihewa, Chandrapala Kumarage and PC Weliamuna in Colombo on the 21st of October 2011.

“We are taking oaths as elected members of municipal councils at a time the country is facing a challenge to democracy and freedom.

“Government claimed that they were conducting the war to suppress Tamil insurgency in the North.

“However, today we find that a regime of state terror has been established throughout the country.

“It is created on the basis of Sinhala chauvinism.

“When an army unit led by a colonel dispersed a legitimate meeting conducted by TNA MPs, by assaulting everybody, we were told that it was a mistake and not a serious matter.

“But, recently, a popular leader of the government, senior adviser to the President, ex MP Baratha Lakshman Premachandra has been killed in the suburbs of Colombo. He was killed by the official security of a deputy minister, using automatic weapons issued by the state.

“Few days back, police special task force invaded the house of a minister in the western province, carried out a search operation without any legitimate warrant.

“There are many that happened to not so famous.

“All these happened while the government claims that emergency powers are removed.

“Clearly, a regime of state terror is functioning undermining the rule of law in the country.

“It started in the Tamil homeland area but now it has become a menace everywhere.

“The dictatorial constitution, 18th amendment, suppression of devolution was utilised to establish this terror regime.

“This state terrorism is for a purpose; that is to assist certain neo liberal forces involved in plunder of resources. So-called development of the government is based on displacement of people and plunder of resource.

“While people are pushed out of their traditional habitat land, marine resources, minerals and earth resources, forest, water resources etc., are taken over by the neo liberal developers.

“World powers that supported the genocidal war are happy and satisfied about the situation.

“TNA which appealed to the world masters to intervene has come out in an open protest in Vavuniyaa.

“There is mass displeasure in the South too.

“DPF, NSSP and other democratic forces have been involved in all protests in the country. We forged our unity in this struggle.

“There are some who preach socialism but unable to struggle against the repression of democracy and freedom. In fact they have supported the regime of terror.

“The repression is not only for workers, peasants and fishers but also for the local investors. Local industrialists, traders and planters are affected by the repression going on. Election results show that people are looking for a new way out.

“Task before us is to establish freedom and democracy. We have to build a leadership to take the struggle forward.”
