Tamil Eelam Heroes Day was observed in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils amidst intensified monitoring by the occupying military intelligence operatives of genocidal Sri Lanka on Friday. The university community in Jaffna, comprising the student union, teachers association and the union of non-academic staff gathered at Parameasvarar temple, which is located inside the campus of the University of Jaffna, to mark the largest event after 2009 to be organized braving the intimidating presence of the SL military intelligence operatives. Earlier in the day, former TNA parliamentarian and Northern Provincial Councillor M.K. Shivajilingam lit the flame of sacrifice at the historic Nalloor temple. A special prayer was held at St. Patricks Church in Jaffna.

"Karthigaipoo" or Gloriosa Lily flowers, declared as the national flower of Tamil Eelam by the LTTE and used to pay tribute to fallen LTTE fighters, were used at the prayers conducted at the churches throughout the Jaffna peninsula on Friday.

Bells were tolled at the temples as usual and Heroes Day memorial events were held at several places in Ki'linochchi, Mullaiththeevu, Mannaar and Vavuniyaa districts.

The Citizens' Committee of Vavuniyaa had openly called to mark Tamil Heroes Day in a statement issued to the public.

Mannaar Citizens' Committee Chairman Fr. Sebamalai, Secretary B.A. Antony Mark, NPC Minister of Fisheries, Transport, Trade and Rural Development B. Deniswaran (TELO) and ITAK Youth Wing leader V.S. Sivaharan took part in a ceremonial event held at an undisclosed location in Mannaar.

Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF) organised a memorial event in Jaffna with the participation of public on Friday. TNPF Secretary and former parliamentarian Selvaraja Kajendren and Visvalingam Manivannan took part in the event.

On Thursday, youth activists in Valveddiththu'rai (VVT) in Vadamaraadchi organised a Heroes Day volleyball tournament. The SL military was harassing the event by deploying four rings of occupying soldiers around the playground. The SL military also cut off the electricity to the grounds. However, more than 6 teams of players took part in the event and prizes were also distributed in the evening.
