Colombo deploys extremist Sinhala monk to escalate Tamil-Muslim divide in Batticaloa
Colombo deploys extremist Sinhala monk to escalate Tamil-Muslim divide in Batticaloa
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 15 August 2017, 20:22 GMT]
Batticaloa district organizer of Sarath Foneseka's ‘Democratic Party’, which is aligned with Ranil Wickramasinghe's UNP, is responsible for involving the Sinhala Buddhist extremist monk in Batticaloa Ampitiye Sumanarathna Thero to confront Muslims who are at loggerheads with Tamils in a land dispute at Mu’raavoadai village in Batticaloa, informed sources in Vaazhaichcheanai said. On Tuesday, the controversial monk, known for abusive language and violent behaviour against Eezham Tamils, was taking the side of Tamils in a showdown against Muslims. Setting Tamil-speaking Muslims against Eezham Tamils has again become a tactic being adopted by the Colombo regime in recent months to sabotage Tamil-Muslim unity towards the demand for merged North-East. In the meantime, Sinhala colonisation has been stepped up in all directions surrounding Kokku’laay lagoon to wedging North and East.
The war-ravaged village of Mu’raa-oadai is situated 5 km south of Vaazhaichcheanai town.
Eezham Tamils living in the village were chased away by Muslims twice during the times of war.
The houses of Tamils were burnt down by Muslims backed by the occupying Sinhala military in 1985 during the emergence of Tamil militant movements.
During the late 1980s, when the Indian military intervened in the dispute through the so-called Indian Peace Keeping Force, a road was put up as a border between Muslim and Tamil areas from East to West (Mu’raavoadai to Ko’ndaiyan-kea’ni).
In 1990, when Eelam War II broke out, Muslim paramilitary ‘home guards’ joined Sinhala military in chasing Tamils away from Mu’raa-oadai. The occupying Sinhala military had put up a camp near Kaa’li temple in 1993 seizing the lands of 46 Tamil families.
Resettlement commenced during Ceasefire agreement between the Colombo government and the Tamil Tigers in 2002. But, following the break out of the genocidal war in 2007, the SL military again put up a military base there.
The occupying Sinhala military vacated from the military base in 2014 and Tamil villagers again started to resettle there. A Bo tree and a small Buddha temple worshipped by the Sinhala soldiers were left behind by the soldiers and the resettling villagers were afraid of removing them fearing reprisals from the SL military.
Muslim villagers living on the north side of the divide have occupied the lands of Tamils who were reluctant to resettle along the border due to the hostile environment.
The poverty stricken and war affected Tamil villagers blame the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian S. Yogeswaran for failing to address their concerns. The TNA parliamentarian in his turn blamed the public for failing to properly brief him on the problems they were facing.
In the meantime, ‘Democratic Party’ organiser of the district V. Maheswaran has intervened bringing the extremist monk into the dispute. Mr Maheswaran is being promoted by Sarath Foneska and is operating closely with the UNP Establishment in Batticaloa. The former commander of genocidal SL military who was later court-martialed by the Rajapaksa regime due to internal political rivalry, was promoted to newly created rank of Field Marshal in 2015 by the SL President Maithiripala Sirisena. He is now SL Minister of ‘Regional Development’.

The monk is targeting to get the backing of the poverty stricken and mostly female-led Tamil families to erect a Buddhist temple at the locality in turn of chasing out the Muslim occupants.
The monk was already exposed for a similar sinister move at Thampalavaththai village in Poaratheevup-pattu (Ma’ndoor) division in 2014. The people had to confront the monk later. However, the dispute at Thampalavaththai, situated 22 km south of Batticaloa city, was resolved through the courts a year later with a ruling that private owners were entitled to the lands demanded by Sumanarathna Thero.
On Monday, NPC Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran was also complaining to the visiting UN country team that SL minister Rishad Bathiudeen, who has been creating communal disharmony between Tamils and Muslims in Mullaiththeevu district.

Students, families mark 11 years since genocidal massacre of 53 school girls
[TamilNet, Monday, 14 August 2017, 20:58 GMT]
The 11th anniversary of 53 Eezham Tamil school girls and staff who perished in the genocidal aerial massacre, which was known as Chegnchoalai (Sencholai) killing in 2006, was emotionally marked by the families of the victims at Vallipunam in Mullaiththeevu and also by hundreds of Jaffna University students, academics and the staff inside the university premises in Jaffna on Monday. SL President Mahinda Rajapaksa was briefed at least 12 hours before the genocidal attack by Roshan Goonatilake, the commander of the SL Air Force. SL Defence Secretary and presidential sibling Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was instructing the state-owned broadcast apparatus to carry a radio message of warning against school children attending LTTE trainings, said a group of rights activists who have gathered details on the preceding events in Colombo in the final hours before the fateful day.

There are more than enough indicators to conclude the nature of the crime as a genocidal act, the activists said.
SL President and Commander-in-Chief Mahinda Rajapaksa was celebrating in advance, knowing very well that it was school going girls who were attending a first-aid and emergency training organized by the LTTE, who were going to be targeted. The SL military establishment had obtained first-hand reconnaissance data through the Israeli-trained ‘Deep Penetration Unit’ (DPU). A huge fear psychosis would be created in Vanni as a result of the massacre, was the projection presented by the SL military Establishment to SL President on 13 August.
The venue of the Isreali-built Kfir was the premises of Chengnchoalai orphanage at Vallipunam in Mullaiththeevu.
Students, including Sinhalese attending the University of Jaffna, attended the remembrance event along with Vice Chancellor Professor Ratnam Vigneswaran, University Teachers Association and non-academic staff took part in the event attended by hundreds in Jaffna.
The president of Jaffna University Student Union said the remembrance event was first in a series of remembrance events that are to be marked by the student community in the future. It is important to remind the future generations, especially the student community of the contemporary times, that the nature of the crime was genocidal and that the international community also failed to deliver justice.
A community organization named Vanni Cross organized the event at Valli-punam. Tamil National Peoples’ Front led by Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam also staged a memorial event at Vallipunam.
Parents and relatives who have survived the genocidal war on Vanni paid emotional tribute to the victims at Mullaiththeevu. The portraits of the school girls and staff killed in the aerial massacre were displayed at the commemoration events in Jaffna and Mullaiththeevu.
Colombo's Intelligence harasses families of re-united ex-LTTE members in Batticaloa
Colombo's Intelligence harasses families of re-united ex-LTTE members in Batticaloa
[TamilNet, Sunday, 13 August 2017, 23:16 GMT]
The Intelligence wing of the occupying Sinhala military has instructed several village (GS/GN) officials in the rural areas of Batticaloa district to submit written reports providing in-depth details on the whereabouts of former LTTE members, who have been reunited with their families. The SL military intelligence operatives have been visiting house-to-house in Kokkaddichchoalai in Ma'nmunai South-West division, inquiring the families about the workplace of the re-united members, their phone numbers, employer-details and when they were supposed to be at home with their families after their work. Similar surveillance operations have been reported also in Koa'ra'laip-pattu South (Kiraan) and in Poaratheevup-pattu (Vellaa-ve'li) divisions, rights activists in Batticaloa said. The latest harassments are taking place in former LTTE controlled areas.
As satisfactory employment opportunities are scarce in the rural areas, even the disabled among the ex-LTTE cadres have to travel outside the rural areas to find jobs.
In some instances, SL Military Intelligence personnel have also been asking the families to obtain a kind of “character certificate” from the village (GS) officers.
The GS is expected to assure that he or she gets regularly notified on the activities of former LTTE members such as their place of employment and their work routine.
Amidst the renewed harassments, many families find it difficult to let their re-united family members to find jobs outside the neighbourhood.
The most affected group is the disabled among the former LTTE cadres.
The Divisional Secretaries are supposed to include the disabled former LTTE cadres in the programmes of economic assistance of 3,000 rupees per month, which is a programme for disabled people. But, ex-LTTE members have been largely neglected from such programmes, rights activists in Batticaloa say.
The families with female youth are particularly concerned about the harassment coming from the Sinhala soldiers who visit their houses citing inquiries and reporting.
In the rural areas, many people are not aware of their rights. The education facilities are also severely restricted in the rural areas.
In the meantime, a select group of former LTTE members have been recently released from the custody of SL military without going through the SL judiciary. They are deployed as informants by the SL military intelligence and SL Police. This kind of ‘surveillance’ is used to confront the GS officers in Vaakaneari, Pe'nduka'l-cheanai and Kaanaanthanai villages, the sources further said.

Occupying Colombo is silently promoting Chinese firms to enter militarised Poonakari (Pooneryn), which is situated in a controlling location linking Vanni with Jaffna Peninsula, with Palk Bay and Jaffna Lagoon on either side. During the times of Rajapaksa regime, China was showing interest in a plan for building an airport in Poonakari. Under Maithiripala and Wickramasinghe, Chinese firms are being invited by Colombo without the knowledge of Northern Provincial Council. In the meantime, Chinese fishing firms are also entering Ariyaalai East and the islets off Jaffna for fishing and freshwater crab farming. The SL Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, which is complicit in grabbing the territorial seas of Vanni away from Eezham Tamils, is bringing in Chinese firms to Ariyaalai East and the islands off Jaffna without informing the NPC, civil sources in Jaffna said.
The occupying Colombo has already allocated lands for a sophisticated solar-wind hybrid power plant to be ‘developed’ through deploying a Chinese firm.
Chinese companies are also going to receive lands for launching fresh water fishing farms at Ariyaalai East, on the opposite side of the Jaffna lagoon, informed sources further said.

The SL Government Agent of Ki'linochchi or the Divisional Secretary of the Poonakari, who receive instructions from the colonial rulers from Colombo have not been officially informed about the resources being alienated for the purpose of the power plant or fresh-water fishing. The Northern Provincial Council has not been consulted on the issues.
A number of benamies, particularly from South, are involved in bringing Chinese firms into North and the SL Fisheries Department officials are silently facilitating the plans, the sources added.
Chinese fisheries companies are showing interest in faring blue crabs along Jaffna lagoon and in the islets off Jaffna.
Malaysian registered firms have also entered the fray.
Meanwhile, Colombo has also silently engaged in assessing possibilities for cement production at Ponnaa-ve'li in Poonakari through deploying a Japanese company. The move has sparked reactions from the NPC, which has been concerned of the danger of salination.
SL Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe has been pushing for Colombo-centric major industrialisation targeting the resources in the North and East. ‘Development’ and ‘Environment’ is the pretext used for the exploitation of the resources in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils.

SL Forest Department schemes Sinhala colonisation in Vavuniyaa North
SL Forest Department schemes Sinhala colonisation in Vavuniyaa North
[TamilNet, Friday, 11 August 2017, 23:02 GMT]
The Forest Department of genocidal Sri Lanka is refusing to allow Eezham Tamil owners of 1,750 acres of forested farmlands at Nayinaa-madu GS division in Vavuniyaa North to enter their lands. 175 Eezham Tamil families own the lands since they were given 10 acres per family in 1982. Later, due to massacres carried out by the occupying Sinhala military and Sinhala homeguards paramilitary, the landowners who had planted Palmyra trees were unable to maintain their farms. The entire area had become forested again during the times of war. All attempts by the landowners to regain their lands after 2009 have failed as the SL Forest Department has been blocking them from entering the lands. Now, the lands are about to be secretly transferred to Sinhala colonists, TNA Parliamentarian Sivaskathi Ananthan has said.
The 1,750 acres of lands are situated between Nayinaa-madu and Ananthar-Pu'liyang-ku'lam. Muruthoadai village is also being targeted for Sinhala colonisation, informed civil sources in Vavuniyaa North said.
A Sinhala colony was planned at Nayinaa-madu area in 2012 during the times of Rajapaksa. But, the plans were later stalled.
Now, fresh attempts are afoot from several corners indicating a large Sinhala colonisation being silently schemed along with so-called Mahaweli L Zone.
Kokkachchaan-ku'lam has already been converted into a Sinhala colony along with Ken and Dollar farms.
Sinhala colonists in Vavuniyaa North have seized reconstructed irrigation schemes such as the one at Thanik-kal village.
All the lands south of Kanakarayaan-ku'lam in the country of Eezham Tamils are going to be absorbed into Mahaweli L Zone colonisation, the civil sources said substantiating the allegation by TNA Parliamentarian Sivasakthi Ananandan.
A Sinhala administrative division has started functioning since 2011 in the Mullaitheevu district renaming the Tamil Ma’nal-aa’ru into Weli-Oya in Sinhala and seizing the lands of Eezham Tamils.
The Weli-oya division in the Mullaith-theevu district of the Northern Province, created for the exclusive purpose of Sinhalicisation of a strategic piece of Tamil Land in order to wedge the North from the East, has been carved out by joining territories of the Mullaith-theevu district as well as territories of the Vavuniyaa district.
This has been done in such a way, so that Vavuniyaa would lose its boundary with Trincomalee and the Sinhalicised Weli-oya will have contiguity with Anuradhapura district of the North Central Province.
The Sinhala colonies in Karaithu'raip-pattu, Ma'nal-aa'ru and in Vavuniyaa North, seek to permanently wedge the demographic contiguity of the northern and eastern provinces of the country of Eezham Tamils.

Jaffna village terrorised by ‘revenge arrests’ of STF
Jaffna village terrorised by ‘revenge arrests’ of STF
[TamilNet, Thursday, 10 August 2017, 23:22 GMT]
At least 42 young Eezham Tamils have been subjected to targeted cordon and search arrests in recent days at the village of Thunnaalai in Vadamaraadchi Soth-West, Jaffna. The so-called ‘Special Task Force’, which is a full-fledged military commando force organised under police of genocidal Sri Lanka. The normalcy of the village is completely marred by the cordon and search operations almost on a daily basis. The series of arrests have come as a targeted revenge against the poverty-stricken Tamil villagers, who smashed an SL police post a month ago when the police gunned down 24-year-old Yogarajah Thinesh, who was seated a vehicle after scooping sand at Kudaththanai and escaping police hunt.
While the occupying Sinhala military and its agents are the main actors involved in illegal scooping, the SL police and STF have declared a war against the poverty-stricken Thunnaalai villagers as some of their youth, unable to find jobs, were also involved in the illegal sand scooping.
The villagers have twice complained to the office of the SL Human Rights Commission reiterating that normalcy has been fully disturbed as many of their young men have sought refuge elsewhere fearing arrests and torture.
The STF was also trying to detain the youth under the notorious ‘Prevention of Terrorism Act’ which is totally unrelated to the situation.
The villagers were earlier demanding an investigation into the killing of Thinesh through an independent body as the SL police was party to the crime. They were also demanding witness protection from the so-called ‘Human Rights Commission’ office in Jaffna.
On Wednesday, the parents of 42 Tamil men who have been detained by the SL Police jointly urged immediate restoration of normalcy through a joint appeal at the office of the SL Human Rights Commission in Jaffna.
The villagers have also taken up their plight with Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, who has a thorough understanding of their situation, the villagers said.
SL Military Intelligence is instrumental in the targeted arrests, which have been carried out by the STF commandos.
The STF commandos who have been storming the village almost on daily basis have been claiming that they were targeting 90 Tamil youths in Thunnaalai village.

Occupying Colombo harasses resettled Tamils through 3 Intelligence squads in Champoor
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 09 August 2017, 22:33 GMT]
Deploying Sinhala, Muslim and Tamil Intelligence personnel belonging to SL Police, SL Army and SL Navy, occupying Colombo has increased its harassment of resettled Eezham Tamils at Champoor in Trincomalee in recent days. Each and every move by the people to democratically voice for their needs is also being confronted through Intelligence meddling, rights activists in Champoor told TamilNet on Wednesday. Genocidal Sri Lanka is attempting to deconstruct the social institutions and the remaining ability of the people to mobilize themselves, the activists said. “During the time of Rajapaksa rule, we were living constantly under the gunpoint in various welfare camps. But we knew who they were. But, now they come from different places with pistols inside their clothes. They converse in a harassing manner and we live under a constant military surveillance,” a grassroots activist commented.
The SL Police Intelligence have appointed three Muslims and Two Sinhala personnel exclusively to monitor the resettled people of Champoor.
SL Army Intelligence seems to have deployed 2 Tamil operatives and the SL Navy has dispatched 2 Sinhala and 2 Tamil intelligence personnel to exclusively monitor and harass the people of Champoor, rights activists said.
Whenever there is an attempt to mobilize for a protest, the intelligence operative are the first to respond. They call almost everyone and pose various questions.
The Intelligence operatives also ‘advice’ the people in a harassing manner by asking the people to adopt a ‘collaborative approach’ with the SL authorities.
The harassments have again increased as the people were preparing for a protest on Thursday demanding appointment of a government doctor to the hospital.
One of the intelligence operatives has told the activists in the village that the intelligence squads were facing increasing pressure from their top leadership in Colombo to submit written reports.
Former LTTE members who have undergone so-called ‘military rehabilitation’ under captivity and who have returned to their families a long time ago, are being subjected to tight surveillance.
Tension prevails among the resettled families as the SL intelligence operatives from three different squads have been repeatedly asking details about the ex-LTTE members, the sources further said.
