SL military, Resettlement ministry jointly deceive uprooted Valikaamam Tamils
[TamilNet, Sunday, 16 April 2017, 23:29 GMT]
A section of officials attached to Jaffna District Secretariat and the Divisional Secretariat of Thellip-pazhai, have deceived around 114 families of uprooted Tamils living in the so-called welfare centers to opt for buying alternative lands elsewhere in Jaffna. The officials, operating under ‘ministerial instruction’ from Colombo to collaborate with the designs of the occupying SL military at Palaali in Jaffna, have been locking some of these families telling them that they would ultimately receive their lands in Valikaamam North in future, but until that time comes, they should move out of the welfare camps into lands they purchase with the money offered by SL Resettlement Ministry as a ‘temporary’ measure.
Although the landowners of welfare camps are demanding their lands back and there are cases pending in the courts with deadlines in June, August and September this year to close down some of the 34 camps in Jaffna, the SL military and collaborating civil officials are trying to use the opportunity to lock the families to opt for lands outside Valikaamam North.
The civil officials have told the families that they would receive funds to the extent of 200,000 rupees per acre with the maximum allocation of upto 2 acres per family. The family has to locate lands.
Only 6 of 114 families have managed to find lands at the rate of 200,000 rupees per acre.
Since the allocation is below the average price, the families have been forced to find such alternative lands at remote areas without infrastructure facilities.
The families were further told that if they buy the lands quickly, they would be eligible for ‘fitting’ houses under the scheme being run by the SL Resettlement Ministry.
The provincial government authorities or the representatives of the uprooted people have no say in the design of the solutions.
In reality, this is a military tactic to make the people to consider alternative solutions as permanent solutions, informed sources at the District Secretariat said.
While a section of the officials attached to the District Secretariat in Jaffna hoodwinks the uprooted Tamils, an official in Thelllippazhai Divisional Secretariat has transferred the lands belonging to private land owners inside the occupied Valikaamam North to the SL military demarcating the lands as ‘public lands’, says Shageevan Shanmugalingam, who represents the uprooted Tamils of Valikaamam North.
The deceptive plan was set afoot by former Jaffna commander of the SL military, Maj Gen Mahesh Senanayake, who is now the Chief of Staff of the SL Army.

People express solidarity with protests, low-key New Year in North-East
[TamilNet, Saturday, 15 April 2017, 11:18 GMT]
Eezham Tamils in North and East observed a largely silent Chiththirai
New Year this year as the uprooted people in Mannaar and Mullaiththeevu
are on the streets waging continuous protests along with the kith and
kin of those subjected to enforced disappearances at the hands of the
occupying Sinhala military. A protest march was staged in Vavuniyaa in
support of the protest of the families of enforced disappeared. People
wearing black armbands took part in the protest. In the meantime,
occupying SL military personnel wearing traditional Sinhala clothes
attempted to ‘celebrate’ New Year with protesting people at
Keappaa-pulavu. The protesting people declined the offer and firmly
stated that they would only celebrate New Year after getting their
village back.
The protesters were flying black flags and continued their protests in black clothes.
It became clear on Friday that the continuing protests across the districts have caused a huge impact in the minds of the people.
The protest in Vavuniyaa reached 50th day on Friday.
Both the uprooted people waging their protests at Keappaa-pulavu (Mullaiththeevu), Mu'l'lik-ku'lam (Mannaar) and at Pa'n'naa-ka'ndi (Ki'linochchi) were encouraged to see the increasing support of the people from of all walks of life.
One could clearly see the divide among the people in the island on the New Year day with spectacular celebrations in the South.

Swaminathan’s ministry neglects reconstruction of temples in Ampaa’rai
Swaminathan’s ministry neglects reconstruction of temples in Ampaa’rai
[TamilNet, Friday, 14 April 2017, 19:18 GMT]
Hindu temples destroyed by the occupying SL military during the times of war in Ampaa’rai district are being systematically sidelined in the allocation of funds for reconstruction despite repeated requests, complains the Trustee Board of Aaladi Pi’l’laiyaar temple, which is located in Poththuvil town of Ampaa’rai district. Similarly, the management of the Hindu temple at Inspector Eattam, located 2 km north of Poththuvil town, also says that the temple, which sustained destruction for two decades, has been systematically deprived of funds for a decent reconstruction.
While Sinhala and Muslim politicians are competing with each other in constructing Buddhist temples and Mosques even in Poththuvil, Saiva temples subjected for systematic neglect in Poththuvil and its suburbs, face increasing hostility from intruding extremist sections from other communities, the representatives of temple management further said.
Aaladi temple, which was one of the earliest temples in Ampaa’rai town, sustained severe destruction in 1990. The trustee board resumed the activities using the funds collected from the people. Apart from the public support, there has been no funds allocated by the SL ministry for religious affairs, they said.
The temple at Inspector Eattam was destroyed several times by the Special Task Force (STF). Whenever the STF was confronted by the Tigers at Inspector Eattem, the temple had to bear the brunt of the assault by the angry STF personnel who were hostile to the local population.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has been criticised by the voters for not prioritising the burning issues Ampaa'rai Tamils.
