Colombo refuses to release 3 political prisoners who have completed serving prison terms: MP
Three Tamil males from Mullaiththeevu were detained by the Maldivian authorities in May 2007 for suspicious movement in the international waters off Maldives. A Maldivian court later sentenced them for 15 years of imprisonment. The prisoners were handed over to Colombo along with necessary documents and the verdict to serve the remaining terms. The prisoners have completed their terms in May as one prison year is calculated as 8 months and 10 days if served continuously. However, the SL State is refusing to release them, TNA Parliamentarian Charles Nirmalanathan said. The Tamil parliamentarian from Mannaar said that the families of the three prisoners had taken up the matter with the previous SL Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe in July and that the SL minister had promised to forward their request to SL Attorney General's Department and to SL Prison Authority.
But, the SL authorities are still refusing to release the prisoners who have served their terms, Mr Nirmalanathan said.
Now, the SL authorities are saying the details of the cases were still with Maldivian authorities and that the documents were being translated through a request placed through the SL Foreign Ministry.
As far as the families were informed earlier, all the documents were handed over to SL authorties by the Maldivian authorities along with the prisoners.
The SL authorities are buying time with a hidden motive of having the prisoners in the jail, the parliamentarian said.

SL Police reluctant to act against SLFP goons in Batticaloa
SL Police reluctant to act against SLFP goons in Batticaloa
[TamilNet, Saturday, 11 November 2017, 17:19 GMT]Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, a former Tiger commander turned paramilitary operative of the occupying Sinhala military in 2004, has illegally seized 25 acres of farmlands that belong to 16 private landowners at Thadaa'nai in Pearillaa-ve'li of Koa'ra'laippattu South (Kiraan) Division and transferred the lands to his sister, the affected landowners complain. The SL Police is not prepared to act against the encroachers, the landowners said. Mr Muralitharan who became a deputy minister in Mahinda Rajapaksa's cabinet in 2009 and later joined Rajapaksa's SLFP, has appointed his sister as the head of SLFP Women Wing in Batticaloa.
Muralitharan's sister and a gang led by Karuna's paramilitary associate ‘Saththiyan’ have threatened to knife the landowners if they continued to engage in farming in the lands that have been illegally seized by Mr Muralitharan's family.
While the Agrarian Service Department at Kiraan has confirmed the ownership of the lands to its rightful landowners, Karuna paramilitary is making claims to the lands saying the lands constituted an LTTE-run farm in the past.
The landowners say they had allowed the LTTE to operate the farm in the past, as it was a community farming initiative that benefited the landowners and the larger society. That doesn't give a renegade commander any exclusive rights to claim it as his family property, they said.
The LTTE operated farm was at 115 acres and consisted of lands belonging to 32 families, civil sources in the division said. Karuna group is attempting to fence off 25 acres of these lands.
The landowners, affected by floods during monsoon rains, say they also want to convert a portion of the upper-lying farmlands for residential purposes.

Tamil-speaking aborigines face existential threat in Moothoor, Trincomalee
Tamil-speaking aborigines face existential threat in Moothoor, Trincomalee
The officials of the Wildlife Department of occupying Colombo have threatened Tamil-speaking aborigines, who had resettled in their traditional lands in Chantha'na-veddai located near Kal-malai in Moothhoor DS Division of Trincomalee district, to vacate their huts. The aborigines who have been residing in the area for centuries were provided with documents proving their ownership to lands as far back as 1972. During the times of war, they were uprooted from Chantha'na-veddai. After 2009, the people resettled back and have constructed huts. Their livelihood is cultivating finger millet and jowar since 2009. Sinhala Wildlife Department officials are now claiming the area as coming under their domain and have instructed the Tamil aborigines to vacate the lands, civil sources in Trincomalee said.
SL Wildlife Department guards, who came to Chantha'na-veddai on Wednesday, have also detained three native farmers for ‘encroaching’ into ‘State’ lands.
The move comes after the aborigines requested Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan to provide permanent houses as they have been marginalised without proper assistance.
At the same time, stone quarrying Muslim traders, currently camped at Kal-malai area, have also been influencing the SL officials to chase away the aborigines, the sources further said.
An aborigine tribe of the island, living in forests, caves and rock shelters, and moving from place to place subsisting on hunting and gathering honey etc. until recent times, is called Veadar in Tamil and Wædda in Sinhala. The tribe is referred to as Veddah in English writings.
Considered as belonging to an Austro-Asiatic stock and as surviving descendants of the prehistoric populations and cultures of the island, the Veddahs have lost their language and speak either Tamil or Sinhala depending on the region they live in. However, their separate identity and culture are often recognized.

World Bank to fund genocidal Sinhala colonisation of Tamil lands in Batticaloa
World Bank to fund genocidal Sinhala colonisation of Tamil lands in Batticaloa
[TamilNet, Thursday, 09 November 2017, 23:19 GMT]SL Mahaweli Ministry, which is led by SL President Maithiripala Sirisena, has schemed a major Sinhala colonisation programme targeting the pasturelands of Eezham Tamils in two administrative divisions of Paduvaankarai region in Batticaloa district, informed civil sources at Batticaloa District Secretariat told TamilNet this week. While 320 Tamil dairy farmers from the two divisions of Ea'raavoor-pattu (Chengkaladi) and Koa'ra'laippattu South (Kiraan) are already struggling without adequate pasturelands for their cattle, SL Mahaweli ministry has sketched out a new plan to distribute 49 acres per Sinhala colonists through a leasing programme. The overwhelming majority of the recipients are Sinhala farmers, initial reports said. The programme, if allowed to be implemented, would be one of the disastrous Sinhala colonisation schemes in the district, the sources further said.

System B of Mahaweli scheme targets to Sinhalicise and colonise the agricultural and grazelands of Eezham Tamils in Batticaloa. The area being subjected to occupation was safeguarded by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) till 2007 and is known as Paduvaan-karai
The Tamil farmers finally managed to dismantle some of the colonisation schemes only last year. But, it seems to be a short-lived pause.
The SL regime, which was documenting to visiting UN officials that it had dismantled the colonisation schemes in Paduvaankarai, has now planned a new scheme to seize the lands again.
The programme is to be rapidly implemented in January 2018, the sources further said.
Now, even legal action would not be possible as SL Mahaweli Ministry would be using its authority under the genocidal ‘development’ agenda to lease out the lands, Tamil dairy farmers complained.
This is also an attempt to deprive the Tamil farmers of one of their prime source of livelihood in the district, they said.
Lands are distributed under island-wide population ratio through Mahaweli scheme. The provincial councils have no say in the development programmes run by the unitary State mechanism.
According to the so-called ‘national ratio’, ethnic Sinhala-Buddhists constitute 69%.
When it comes to Mahaweli system 96% of the beneficiaries have been Sinhalese in the past.
Tamils who constitute 16% (Tamils from North-East 12% and Up-country Tamils 4%) were given only 1.5% of lands.
Tamil-speaking Muslims, who stand for 8% of the ethnic ratio, received only 2.5%.
Hailing from Polonnaruwa, Mr Sirisena has been implementing a long-term Sinhalicisiation agenda within the so-called System B, which is the largest of Mahaweli ‘Development’ programme, consisting of 75,441 ha., including 27,179 ha of irrigable lands in Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa districts under the pretext of ‘development’.
The federation of dairy farmers in Paduvaankarai is planning to launch agitations against the move, the representatives of the farmers said.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam defended Paduvaankarai for a long time from Sinhala colonisation.
