The recently launched Tamil People’s Council (TPC) has formed a 15-member sub-committee on Sunday consisting of appointed members from various stakeholders representing Tamil political parties and civil groups in the North and East. The subcommittee will formulate a preliminary report articulating the fundamentals of a political solution-outlook of the Tamil people in one month. The approach will be a scientific one, said one of the co-chairs of the initiative, Dr P Lakshman, who is a consultant cardiologist at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, the chief minister of the Northern Provincial Council, who also co-chairs the TPC, re-iterated that the process would be strengthened through the participation of various stakeholders, regardless of their background or political affiliation.

The Tamil diaspora will also be consulted through an advisory component in the process and foreign experts, regardless of their nationality, will be consulted depending on the field of their expertise, the co-chairs further said.

The initial report will be placed to the public in a transparent manner. Final blueprint would be composed incorporating the input gathered from the grassroots in three to four months, the co-chairs further said.

The co-chairs were particular in reiterating that the TPC was not oriented towards any of the political parties taking part in the process and that the majority of the council are independent of the political parties participating in the process.

Tamil-speaking Muslims constitute a distinct community entitled to decide its own political destiny. The sub-committee will decide on how to accommodate the Muslims in the process forward, Dr. Lakshman further said.
